It was a sweltering day in New York City as the bustling crowds of New York Comic Con buzzed with excitement. The convention center was a vibrant tapestry of costumes and characters, each more imaginative and elaborate than the last. Among the throngs were two cosplayers, best friends and long-time companions, Jess "Jellybean" Johnson and Mike "Metal Mike" McCarthy. Jess had come as Sailor Moon, complete with the iconic fuku, tiara, and oversized, poofy skirt, while Mike was the muscle-bound hero from an obscure internet comic, the mighty Hyperion. His costume included a red cape that flowed dramatically behind him, along with a chest plate that was so detailed, it could have been the centerpiece of a museum’s armor exhibition.
The duo had planned their cosplay photography session for weeks, aiming to capture the essence of their favorite characters and share their passion with others. They met up at their hotel to finalize details before heading to the convention center. Jessica, donning her tiara and posing, declared, “Alright, Metal Mike, let’s make it look like we're ready to save the world!”
Mike, strapping on his chest plate, replied with a wink, “We got this, Jellybean! Let’s show them what it means to be a team.”
Their first stop was the cosplay photography area, a large hall filled with makeshift photo backgrounds and props arranged neatly along the walls. They were joined by a sea of other cosplayers, all eager to capture their moment in the spotlight. Jess and Mike waited patiently in line, Jessica twirling her skirt for practice and Mike flexing his arms—though the effort was more about maintaining composure in his elaborate costume than showing off.
When they finally made their way to the photographer, a middle-aged man with a serious expression and a camera that looked like it could have been sent to space, they were greeted with, "Ready to make some history?"
Jess nodded excitedly, “Absolutely!”
The photographer positioned them by a backdrop of a cosmic fantasy scene with stars, planets, and nebulae, aiming to create the ultimate intergalactic team picture. Mike, with great ceremony, posed with his cape spread wide, and Jess struck a pose, hands together and tiara glinting under the stage lights.
“Alright, one, two, three, say cheese!” the photographer called out.
Jess responded with enthusiasm, “Cheese!” but she tripped on the edge of her poofy skirt and tumbled forward. Mike, in a split-second decision, caught her, both crashing into the backdrop, knocking over a small planet prop which landed on Mike’s head with a thud. The photographer, instead of scolding them, burst into laughter.
“Nice one,” he chuckled, “let’s try this again?”
They dusted themselves off and set up for another attempt. Jess managed to keep her balance, but Mike, being the gentleman, decided to kneel and hold his cape up like a grand chaperone. As Jess stepped forward, the photographer instructed, “Perfect! Just a bit more to the right—”
At that moment, a group of excited children ran past, and the photographer’s attention was momentarily diverted. “Wow, that’s awesome,” he said, gesturing to the children, not realizing he had turned the camera in their direction and away from Jess and Mike.
When they finally noticed, Jess whispered to Mike, “I don’t think this picture will be what we expected…”
Sure enough, when they checked the photographer’s camera, the screen displayed a shot of the children, with Jess and Mike barely visible at the edge, and Jess’s tiara was halfway off her head, giving her a puzzled, slightly disoriented look.
Undeterred, they decided to take one last shot. This time, the photographer was keen to get it right. “Alright, this is it. Just make it look like you're about to teleport away!”
Jess and Mike struck their poses again, and the photographer counted down, “One, two, three—”
This time, Jess, in her excitement to teleport away, jumped a bit too high, hitting the photographer’s camera strap and sending him sprawling, while she landed right on top of him. Mike, in an effort to save the day, tried to help, but his cape got tangled up in a nearby prop spaceship, which tipped over and nearly crashed into the photographer.
The room erupted in laughter, and the photographer, now covered in a layer of cosmetic costume pieces, said with a grin, “I think we’ve got the shot!”
After untangling themselves and cleaning up the mess, Jess and Mike sat together, catching their breath and reflecting on their adventurous photoshoot. “You know,” Jess said, “I think this might be the best cosplay pic we’ve taken yet, even with all the chaos.”
Mike nodded, “Agreed. And who knows, maybe we’ll be known as the most chaotic cosplayers of New York Comic Con.”
They laughed as they headed to their next destination, looking forward to more adventures and, hopefully, more successful photoshoots. But for now, the memory of their first photo shoot with the most unexpected twists would stay with them forever, a testament to the sheer joy and unpredictability of cosplay.
